New Blood

19/11/2018

We are out for blood!!
Each year a group of farmers and villagers pull together in a very
special way to put on Llangynidr Agricultural Show. They have done
this for the last twelve years – and now they are out for blood!
‘New blood’ is needed to help with the organisation of the Show and
to keep it up to date. We are not talking about putting up tents and
gazebos for Show Day but the planning, running/organising and
logistics of the Show itself.
If you have hidden talents or skills of modern life and would like to
help then come along to the AGM on 21 January at 7.30pm in the
Village Hall (or contact us, as below). Make yourself known to us!
We are aware that there are many ‘newcomers’ to the village (and
some longer residents) who might be ready to take a more active role
in the village. Here is your chance!
For further details please contact us
Diolch yn fawr   Thank you.

Wales Air Ambulance

18/9/2018

We are very proud to have been able to support Wales Air Ambulance this year.  We all appreciate the essential service this charity provides.  By a combination of our own efforts, including a sheep being led around the showground by her owner Louise with a bucket for contributions, and the fundraising team from Wales Air Ambulance on site raising awareness and selling their charity merchandise, we managed to raise £200 on show day.

We were very pleased to be able to present Annie Lawrie, representing Wales Air Ambulance, with a cheque for £200 yesterday evening.  Thanks to Annie for all her efforts supporting the show and for coming along to meet us yesterday.  We send Wales Air Ambulance our very best wishes and hope to be able to support them again in the future.

2018 Llangynidr Agricultural Show Report

18/9/2018

Despite the very wet weather on Sunday August 26th, Llangynidr Show went ahead and those who braved the weather had a great day's entertainment.  Entries to (outdoor) competition classes were low compared to previous years, but with the usual very high standards; congratulations to all the winners.  The Farmers' Market and Demonstration Tents were exceptionally popular.  A great turn out in the Farmers' Market, heavily oversubscribed for those wanting stalls, and the tent was buzzing with customers all day.  The Demonstration Tent had a packed programme from noon to 5pm; every demonstration had a full and attentitve audience.

The main ring was also busy all day.  Some improvisation from those putting on the show was needed, for example a static display of the birds of prey from Black Mountatins Falconry under cover during the heaviest rain, but then a full flying display later in the afternoon.  Our thanks go to all of our main ring acts for their cooperation under difficult circumstances.  Thanks also to others around the showground supporting us and entertaining the crowds, for example Dylan's Tours demonstrating the ancient Welsh art of making and using coracles.

The show was opened by Terry Walton, radio gardener, and Lynn Allbutt, local author, gardener and barefoot walker, both of whom also ran a gardeners' questions session in the demo tent.  Thank you to Terry and Lynn.

We had plenty of traders on site; food stands, charities, outdoor clothing, firewood, renewable power and agricultural merchants were just some examples.  Even the Ice Cream van did some business!  The grand draw was very popular as always.  We had an excellent array of vintage vehicles, ranging from pushbikes and motorbikes to tractors, joined this year by South Wales Land Rover Club.  The sheep shearing and spinning demonstrations were as popular as ever, thank you also to those who put so much effort into these fascinating demonstrations.

Congratulations to our partners on the day - Llangynidr Garden Club's 75th Annual Show was a great success in the village hall with high numbers and quality of entries, and Bwlch & Crickhowell Young Farmers' Club's Speed Shearing event in the evening was extremely popular and proved to also work well in raising much-needed club funds.

Lots of thank yous - to the committee for all their hard work all year, to those who turned out to help set up and tear down the showground, to those working in the kitchens providing excellent food as always, to our exhibitors, traders, photographers, competitors, judges, stewards, vice presidents, sponsors, advertisers, security team, road and car park stewards, bar staff and everyone else involved - your contributions are all extemely highly appreciated and we couldn't do it without you.  And of course thank you to everyone who came along on the day to make the show so enjoyable.

2018 Results

8/9/2018

We have most of our results posted now on the competition pages.  Still awaiting the confirmed results for all 3 horse rings, and for the garden and craft show, but you will find the rest available now.

Our photographers have been busy sifting through the many pictures they took on a wet but enjoyable show day.  Plenty more to come, but we hope this initial set from Peter Childs gives a flavour of the day - plenty of rain and plenty of smiles.

2018 Main Ring entertainment

10/8/2018

As ever, we have a great line-up of main ring entertainment in 2018.  We are just finalising the programme timings which will be listed on notice boards around the showground on show day, but if you've been before you'll know we cram a lot in.

The programme will start a little after 11am, giving you time to start the day visiting a few of the other attractions around the show between 9 and 11 - a very busy livestock section, multiple rings of horse displays and competition, the farmers' market marquee full to the rafters with all sorts of goodies, many, many trade stands, and the list goes on...and of course you'll need a bit of time to buy your all-important raffle tickets for the grand draw.

Making a very welcome return after a few years away from our show is Hywel Davies and his excellent display of sheep dog skills with runner ducks in place of the sheep.  Always popular, we are really looking forward to seeing Hywel again up from Pembrokeshire.  His display combines expert skill from dog and handler, with the comedy that always arises from watching Indian Runner ducks.

Fresh from the Royal Welsh Show, and many events around the country all summer, we welcome back Black Mountains Falconry.  The birds are on show for you to see all day (in the shade of some trees in the playing fields part of the showground) and will be performing their fantastic display in the main ring, with the usual high level of audience participation.  Come along and get close up to these wonderful birds of prey, of which the falconers have multiple species.  Ask whatever questions you have and be sure to see their main ring display.

Since forming in 2007 with the sole purpose of raising money for charity, the Wye Valley Axemen have been giving crowd pleasing displays at events across Mid Wales and the Borders. Apart from their expenses, all fees received are donated to charities which have been chosen for the year.  Contained within the displays are speed, skill and accuracy using razor sharp axes and saws as we bring to life the lumber jack techniques of years gone by.
After a few years away from Llangynidr Show, we are thrilled to have the axemen back and we are really looking forward to their exciting display.
Weather permitting, we hope to see 2 displays from each of these excellent acts.  Also in the main ring, we will have parades of hunting hounds from Gelligaer and of the Monmouthshire Beagles, the opening ceremony at 12 noon, and the grand draw announcement at around 4:15 before we hand over control to Bwlch and Crickhowell Young Farmers Club for their 2nd annual speed shearing competition.

Show Openers - a gardening theme

22/7/2018

When choosing people to open Llangynidr Show, we like to cover a variety of interests related to the rural and agricultural themes of our show.  This year, at around 12 noon, we have a gardening aspect to the show opening ceremony.  This is only fitting as our sister event, the Llangynidr Garden and Craft Show, running in parallel on the same day in the Village Hall, is celebrating its 75th year!

So this year's show is being opened by Terry Walton (allotment expert, author, radio presenter...) and Lynne Allbutt (author, TV and radio presenter, barefoot walker...), both widely regarded for their gardening expertise (alongside their many other skills).

Timing to be confirmed, but at some point on show day in the demonstration tent, Terry and Lynne will also be ready to answer your questions in a "Gardeners' Question Time"-style session.  Please come prepared with your questions to make best use of their deep knowledge and skills.
